Combatting sleep disorders in service members and veterans

The Geneva Foundation advances operationally relevant, military-unique research aligned with DoD requirements to ensure mission success. It accelerates military medical R&D to deliver deployable solutions that enhance the health, readiness, and capabilities of service members and the communities they serve. With deep expertise in research operations, government contracting, strategic collaborations, and commercialization, Geneva ensures successful research outcomes and remains a committed strategic partner in advancing military medicine.

Empatica’s EmbracePlus wearable was selected for the INSIGHT study (Insomnia, Nightmares, and Sympathetic Hyperactivity InvestiGation in the warfigHTer), a project initiated by Navy Cmdr. (Dr.) Werner and funded by the Defense Health Agency.

The study aims to measure the hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, also known as the “fight or flight” system, and modulate sympathetic hyperactivity via wearable devices, to help improve sleep quality in warfighters with traumatic brain injury and/or post-traumatic stress.

EmbracePlus will be used to track sleep, electrodermal activity (EDA), and cardiac measures of study participants. The “fight or flight” system will be measured in individuals with insomnia and traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress, and in healthy individuals. To meet this goal, EmbracePlus’ sensors will be leveraged to help characterize sleep and autonomic nervous system responses in the study population, with a focus on the analysis of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity.

The FDA-cleared Empatica Health Monitoring Platform will monitor sleep quality and provide comprehensive sleep-related physiological insights.

The study is a collaboration with The Geneva Foundation and the USU departments of Neurology, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Psychology, and Radiology, and the University of Minnesota, the Sleep Center at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the Henry Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine.
